Marketing Firearm Accessories on Google and Social Media Platforms

How do you market firearms and firearm accessories on Google, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms with shadow banning and advertising restrictions?

Back when social media was new, many gun companies built massive followings. For those that showed up late to the party, it’s now a matter of playing catch-up. There are rules, and if you break them too many times, a company in the firearms industry can be banned entirely.

Most social media platforms do allow firearms companies to have pages and post content. However, they limit advertising and restrict reach. Essentially, firearm-related posts—no matter how good—are typically shown only to followers, subscribers, people who search hashtags, or those who receive the content through shares.

While these restrictions are frustrating and may feel like a violation of First and Second Amendment rights, it’s important to look at it from the hosting platform’s perspective. They want to avoid backlash from users offended by images such as hunters posing with a deer they just harvested—or from those who simply dislike firearms.

The way I see it, if they don’t want our money, we should find other places to invest it. More importantly, we should focus on organic ways to build an audience and brand awareness—without relying on paid advertising or traditional marketing methods.

Organic Marketing Strategies for Firearms Brands

There are ways for content creators to reach organic audiences without spending a single dollar on ad spend. It does require time and a creative content creator who understands their audience. I’m not going to give away all my secrets, but I will say there are proven ways to grow brand awareness and gain customers organically.

Firearms Industry Rules on Social Media

I strongly suggest reviewing the policies for each platform you plan to use, as rules can change frequently. Also, study what other brands are doing. Be aware that in some cases, accounts can be shut down entirely.

TikTok, in my opinion, is one of the strictest platforms. At the same time, it can be one of the fastest ways to gain followers. However, once you violate their policies—even unintentionally—they will close your account, even if you have hundreds of thousands of followers.

Real-World Results: Digital Marketing at Warne

I worked for Warne for over four years as the Digital Marketing Strategist. During that time, we broke website sales records every year and every month compared to previous years.

Importantly, we never undercut dealer pricing. Even during sales, our prices remained higher than our dealers’ sale prices. In other words, we did not compete with our retailers—yet customers still purchased directly from our website, often paying more.

That does not happen by accident. That comes from volume—specifically, website traffic. And how do you bring volume to a website? With well-written SEO content and strategic content distribution across the web that leads potential customers back to your site.

Creating Content from the Customer’s Perspective

I don’t create content solely from a creator’s point of view. I immerse myself in the customer’s perspective—what they want to see, what they want to learn, and why they should choose our product over others. A key point to remember is its not your story that the customer is interested in. It's how your product or service can serve them.

I can do this with almost any product, but it helps tremendously to be passionate, knowledgeable, or genuinely interested in learning about it. When I was an marketing assistant with an agency I was creating social post for a salad dressing company. I went out and caught a salmon and used their dressing as a marinade and grilled it and took pictures and posted the recipe. I would experiment with it and I became a salad dressing expert.

Passion and Product Knowledge in Firearms Marketing

Having a passion for hunting and shooting sports allowed me to understand our customer better than anyone else in the company. I wasn’t just an employee—I was a customer.

In any industry, a company should be looking for a marketer who is either in or can get into the mind of their customers. It was said I knew our customers better than anyone in the company. This is important for a digital marketer.

SEO and Blogging for Firearms Companies

It is well known that blog posts are one of the best ways to build SEO, attract new customers, and establish brand authority. This is exactly what Google looks for when ranking websites.

Warne consistently ranked in the top three organic results on the first page for searches related to scope mounts. Examples include:

  • “scope mounts for lever action rifles”

  • “best scope mounts for Mauser rifles”

  • “best scope mount for an AR-10”

Many of these rankings came from blog posts I created. Posts like these brought in tens of thousands of new viewers every month. While not all of them converted into buyers, they built brand authority and kept the company positioned at the top of search results.

Although Warne now has a very knowledgeable person managing blog content, they must be careful to maintain the competitive edge that was created.

YouTube still allows firearm-related content, although certain types of videos are no longer permitted. When done correctly, YouTube is an excellent platform for showcasing products and driving sales.

For companies willing to invest, influencer sponsorships can be very effective. I worked directly with influencers I personally followed. Because I approached them as a fan rather than just a brand representative, many showcased our products for free—saving the company significant sponsorship costs.

Instagram Marketing and Brand Collaborations

Instagram is a great platform for collaborating with other brands, ambassadors, and influencers. I attended SHOT Show in 2022 specifically to connect with other brand marketers for collaboration opportunities.

At the time, many didn’t even understand what brand collaboration meant. Today, more companies do—but many are still not doing it effectively.

Challenges of Digital Marketing in the Firearms Industry

Being a digital marketer in the firearms industry is challenging primarily because paid advertising is largely unavailable. While there are ways to post ads discreetly, you must be extremely careful. If you’re flagged too many times, your account can be frozen or permanently shut down.

Because of this, the best approach is to master alternative, organic marketing methods.

Digital Marketing in Firearms Forums

Unfortunately, due to budget limitations, I was only able to test forum marketing on a small scale using NorthwestFirearms.com.

I wanted to expand into larger platforms like AR15.com with an industry partner account, but those options are expensive. That said, I’ve seen brands emerge and grow from those forums—brands I likely would have never discovered otherwise, and brands I’ve personally purchased from based solely on their presence and engagement within those communities.
